This Week’s Focus Point
Too often we find ourselves trying to conquer too many things at once. By serving too many masters, we end up serving none well. I talk often of having a clear purpose that underlies your actions. The next logical question is – what does success look like? This is where ambitious goal setting comes into play. The ‘BHAG’ (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) is often quoted here. Or as Grant Cardone puts it:
To maintain your enthusiasm, you have to make your goals substantial enough that they keep your attention. Average and realistic goals are almost always a letdown to the person setting them – who is then unable to fuel his or her goals with the actions necessary.
But how do you pick your next big thing? Whether it be a 3 year vision or, as we discussed last week, your one ambitious one month goal to throw everything at?
Well, first let’s get in the right ball-park. Here’s some quick parameters to ensure your goal is actually going to drive action:
1) Ensure it’s in line with your clear purpose.
2) Is the goal big enough to require obsession? If the goal isn’t daunting and making you uncomfortable, no one will think of it!
3) In general, it’s better to over commit and figure out how to show up at a higher level.
4) Don’t follow the pack. Lead the pack.
So now that we have added the criteria, start brainstorming.
Here’s some prompts:
– What are the major assumptions you or your organisation has about the way it does what it does? Challenge these.
Or put another way:
What is a commonly held misconception (or reality) about what you do that you can tackle and erradicate?
– If I challenged you to create something exciting enough that it would warrant media attention, what would it be? (Bonus challenge – when you achieve your goal send a media release out to local outlets and through your organisational communications).
– What and who inspires you? Why? Can you translate that into your world?

No seriously, don’t put this off.
Set A Bigger Goal.
Then pursue it with stubborn obsession.
